Probably the most difficult thing to do in this life is to deny one’s self. Interestingly enough, I believe self-denial is the most important ingredient in any relationship that’s worth a nickel. Can you imagine a place where everyone was exclusively interested in pleasing themselves–to the detriment of everyone around them? Now, imagine a place where everyone is exclusively interested in pleasing those around them, especially those with less means, and expecting nothing in return. The first place sounds like hell to me… the second, like heaven above! If you want to have close friends, relationships that are meaningful, or even a strong walk with the Lord, you’ve got to deny yourself each and every day… there’s not one single day where you won’t be tempted at some point or another to do things your own way, or for your own gain. Know this my friends… as long as we inhabit these earthly vessels, we are all in this one together. If you’ve got a friend like the one I’m describing, don’t let this day go by without thanking God for them, and then make sure to let them know just how much you appreciate them. And… don’t forget to thank God for the most important relationship of all!
“Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” 1 John 4:11-12
