“I love you!” How often do you hear those words? How often have you said them? What exactly is love anyway? The Scriptures tell us that “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16). If God is love, then why is there so much pain in the world? Why so much anguish? Why so much death and destruction? I believe our basic problem is that we understand “love” about as well as we understand God. Love is not that warm feeling you get when you first hold hands with someone you care about. Love is not that racy feeling you get with a first kiss. Love is what remains after everything else is destroyed. After everything else is lost. After the warm feelings of new love grow for years upon years, and one mate stands at a casket bidding farewell to the other. God is love, and real love is unending, unconditional, and comes unsolicited by the receiver. If you want to know love, then seek to know God. As you know Him more, you’ll be able to love others more. Love the Lord, and love your neighbor are the two greatest commandments. One is impossible without the other.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
