“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 6:24)
Who’s not heard this famous verse from the Beatitudes? I’ve heard it a thousand times, and would bet many folks who’ve never picked up a Bible have heard it, too! No matter how familiar we are with the verse, considering the state of affairs in our nation today, I doubt people are taking it to heart. I’ve heard a lot of folks claim that money is neutral–that it has no attributes of its own, i.e., it can be used for evil, or for good, or for neither. A further look at the original text of Matthew 6:24 indicates Jesus may have disagreed with that statement. Notice that the word translated “Money” is capitalized. In addition, the original Aramaic word spoken by Jesus “Mammon” was an original. Jesus not only personified the Aramaic word for money, but He also deified it, giving it qualities it had never had before. By doing this, He indicated that it had a unique quality–that it was unlike other possessions. Money (Mammon) can, and does, come between people and God. In fact, for many of us it has become our god!
