I know this may be a news flash to some, since we’re all quite familiar with the prolific sales slogan, “Diamonds Are Forever,” but the truth is, diamonds are NOT forever! It pains me too, especially since some years ago I spent two full months salary (the suggested amount) on my beautiful bride’s diamond engagement ring–one fairly large diamond (on my scale anyway), surrounded by four smaller diamonds. We put a lot of stock in things like diamonds, and the many other possessions we have. Some folks spend every day of their lives working so they can “have more stuff!” The bad news? Yep, none of that is forever either! The Scriptures are quite clear: Even the elements will be destroyed by fire!
“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be. You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.” 2 Peter 3:10-13
Sooo, if you’ve never had a better reason, here’s a little focus check: Is your mind set on things of earth (possessions, education, etc.) or on things that will last for eternity?
In Christ,
