Jesus made a substantial effort to openly communicate with each of the early Christian churches. Many of His words were filled with praise, but some undoubtedly left the recipients feeling like they had just been slapped. Imagine being part of the church that Jesus said was about to make Him “vomit”! Their deeds seemed fine, but their hearts were “lukewarm.” Ouch! But, wouldn’t a church that had formerly been on fire for the Lord most likely accept His Fatherly rebuke and turn their back on their wicked ways. It seems to reason that maybe a firm rebuke was exactly what they needed. Surely letting them continue on the same path would have let them destroy themselves. Sometimes our loving Father sends us messages that are tough to swallow… but that doesn’t mean He’s still not madly in love with us!
“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:19-20
