Imagine a person who has everything still wanting more! Would that be a sane person, or more likely a spoiled and selfish person? What if they wanted more and didn’t care who they had to beat down to get it? At its root that was the lie Satan deceived our first ancestors with–“God is lying to you! He’s not giving you enough… you can have more! In fact, you DESERVE MORE!” So how much is enough anyway? For the person who seeks to serve self, there will never be enough. There will always be something else that “might make them happy!” If the old husband or wife isn’t working out, they’ll seek another one. If the new car gets a scratch, they’ll need a better one. If the neighbor gets something better than they’ve got, they’ll just have to show them up. As a friend of mine once said, “Stuff is the crack cocaine of the American middle class.” Actually, I believe breaking God’s command not to “covet” is the real problem. The worship of “self” and of “stuff” is just the unfortunate result.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Exodus 20:17
