Glitter and Gold

harvestdayton

When I was a teenager, I was approached out of nowhere one day by a man selling gold wrist watches.  Before I even knew what he was talking about, he had one of the sharpest looking watches I’d ever seen draped over my arm.  “Twenty-Five dollars,” he said.  To which I immediately replied, “no thanks.”  Don’t get me wrong now, it wasn’t because I was some moral giant or anything.  I simply didn’t have that much money!  A moment later, I found myself holding this watch, mesmerized by the brilliance of it.  “I’m in a jam,” he told me.  “You can have it for $5.00.”  I guess I wasn’t a mental giant either because I bought it!  As you can imagine, I soon realized I’d been taken–Even at $5.00.  A good friend quickly pointed out that “Rolex” was spelled incorrectly.  Just days after that, I began to notice the “gold” seemed to be wearing thin.  Even though I was robbed, I deserved everything I got.  It was a lesson I’ve never forgotten.

Just like the gold on that watch, the enemy tries to entice us with the glitter and glamour of sin.  The Bible clearly states that sin can be pleasurable “for a short time” (Hebrews 11:25).  Of course, that pleasure is short lived at best.  Soon, we’re stuck with the garbage end of things!  There’s only one way out after that…

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”  Matthew 1:21

Not matter how far you’ve slipped my friend, choose this day to call on the name of the Lord!

In Christ,
