“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters–yes, even his own life–he cannot be my disciple.” Jesus of Nazareth (Luke 14:26)
Now, this might go down as one of the harshest statements Christ ever made if it were taken as it reads in our English language. Of course, Jesus isn’t saying we should “hate” the members of our families in the sense of the emotion “hate.” Rather, we should never let them get between us and pure devotion to Him. I find this scripture interesting in light of the fact I find many a girlfriend/boyfriend situation where one member laid aside their duties as a Christian to serve their newfound “love.” Many times they turn away from their faith completely, not even mentioning it to their “friend” less they might be ridiculed. In the next verse, Jesus makes it clear that these folks are not his disciples…
“And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” Jesus of Nazareth (Luke 14:27)
