If someone does a good thing for you, then it stands to reason that you would owe them a similar good deed in return. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve spent a Saturday helping someone move, or build a deck, or whatever else he needed help with. And… it stands to reason that when I want a deck built, I’ll call the friends I’ve helped. There’s really nothing wrong with this type of thinking, unless you’re only helping people so they’ll owe you! The problems arise when we start thinking similarly of God. Some folks think that God owes them something because of their “good deeds” or because of church attendance or even being faithful in prayer or in giving money. This type of thinking is futile because God doesn’t owe us anything! It was US who sinned, and it was GOD who gave us mercy, not because he needed to, but because he wanted to. Serve God with all you’ve got, and if He blesses you then thank Him all the more. Just don’t get to thinking that God owes you anything… it’s we that owe Him!
