Reading the Bible is a good thing. I’ve been reading and studying it for many years. As a young man, however, I thought it was a ridiculous book and a total waste of time. For years people shoved what they “said” was Scripture at me-telling me the way I was living was wrong. They wanted me to do it “God’s way” and several tried to work in as much “Bible” as they could into our conversations. Frankly, probably nothing turned me off more. But, one day I met a man who simply asked me to consider reading the Bible for myself. He even told me where to start. He challenged me to buy a version written in plain English, and said that he’d be there to answer questions. Almost instantly I had my own revelations of how God worked and what He wanted from me. I wanted to know more, so I started going to church. Before long, I believed what I was reading were the words of my own Creator. Years later I was ordained as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ–not because somebody told me Jesus was the Lord-but because His own words compelled me. My point is not that we should not tell people about God’s love-they desperately need that. But they also need to SEE His love in us! Once we’ve proven our motives are His alone, He can do the talking for Himself just fine. Point them toward His own words!
