I write a lot about the goodness of God and how His grace covers sin and relieves us of our burden before Him. Why? Because the Bible talks a lot about the subject and because I get the feeling that grace is misunderstood in our day and age. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t meet someone who is trying to work their way into God’s favor with good deeds or right living. The thing I don’t mention so much is the other side of God’s holiness–the side that demands justice for sin. Maybe it’s the side of God we don’t often like to think of, but it’s just as relevant for mankind as ever. The bottom line is this… apart from accepting Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins, we will be paying for them ourselves–Eternally! Those who have heard the truth and rejected it will also pay the price.
“If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ and again, ‘The Lord will judge his people.’ It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Hebrews 10:26-31
