At God’s direction, the prophet Samuel once anointed the head of a tall and handsome young man named Saul and proclaimed him Israel’s first king. Although Saul seemed to start out well, it wasn’t long before he had forsaken God and everything that was right and true. Endlessly persecuting the young servant David, Saul proved that jealousy truly is ugly. At the end of Saul’s reign, he’d fallen so far from the Lord that God allowed him, his sons, and all of Israel to be disgraced in battle. Even in death, the once young and handsome Saul suffered as the Philistines severed his head (the very same head that Samuel had anointed) and hung it in the temple of their pagan god, Dagon. Remember this truth as you ponder stepping off God’s path. Not only will you bring disgrace upon yourself, but also upon your family, your church, and ultimately upon the Lord you claim to love. Please, keep your head about you!
“They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.” 1 Chronicles 10:10
