I’m one of those guys who likes to learn. I don’t necessarily like to spend a lot of time in a classroom (yuck), but I do like to read and learn on my own, or in a small group. Probably my favorite thing to read is something that can help me grow in my Christian faith. I guess I’d rather read something like that than a best-selling novel. I also like to read books on leadership. Since I never want to stop growing in this area, probably every other book I read is along those lines. I’m never hurting for material either. The bookshelves are full of “new and improved” leadership theory. Some of it is quite good, but the best leadership book I’ve ever read is the Holy Bible. For example, here’s a chunk of leadership wisdom written about 3000 years ago! It was penned by King David, one of the greatest leaders of all time…. “You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great.” Psalm 18:35 A person could write a whole book on that verse alone. But for starters, a great leader always gives the follower much of the credit for the work, even if the leader was intimately involved in its outcome. In addition, a great leader never stops helping his or her people improve–of course, this can’t be done from the sanctuary of a cozy office on the top floor. A great leader always “stoops down” to wherever the follower is. If you are in a position of authority over people, or if you ever plan to be in the future, I can’t think of a better piece of literature to make your “Bible” for leadership.
