Have you ever had someone lie to you? I’m not talking about those little flattery lies like “Hey, you look nice today” when it’s so obvious you’re having a bad hair day that even your dog noticed! I’m talking about those straight out, unadulterated, big, fat, hairy lies! I bet few people can say they haven’t. How about being on the other end? Have you ever told one? Have you ever told one and then got “found-out” later? Now that’s a painful experience! Lies are probably the most pervasive sin in the world today, and Christians are not excluded. There’s probably not a day that goes by that we don’t either hear a lie, or tell one to somebody else. Lies, as ugly as they are, are probably our best witness to the fact that evil controls much of this world, and that our earthly flesh was invaded by sin right there in the Garden of Eden.
“…He [the devil] was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44
If you’ve been challenged by the sin of untruthfulness, you now know exactly where the root of your challenge lies. That kind of puts things into perspective, doesn’t it? As Christians, we are to cast off this sin, just like all the others.
“keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.” Psalm 34:13
