When you were young did your mother ever count to ten before scolding you? Have you ever heard the saying “Don’t punish your children when you’re angry.” The biblical references abound, but I find this one particularly telling. When Jesus witnessed the moneychangers in the temple courts, he actually sat and “made a whip out of cords” (John 2:15) before acting. Along with Jesus’ other wonderfully enlightening habits were that of praying earnestly–especially before taking on something of this magnitude. I suspect He was praying here as well. Having a herd of kids myself, I know how easy it is to lose my temper with a child. I also know it’s wrong. However difficult it may be, I suggest anyone could improve their parenting skills or any struggle with anger by applying these principles. 1) Don’t act in anger. 2) Don’t act without prayer.
