“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Ephesians 6:1
Imagine a teenager saying something like, “I love my mother, but I just can’t stand it when she tells me what to do.” Surely not too far fetched a statement for the typical American household. What about a Christian teen who says, “I love the Lord and all, but my boyfriend and I are in love too. I just don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t express our love sexually. After all, we’re going to get married as soon as we graduate!” Similarly, a common statement among teens (even Christian teens) in America today. What’s wrong with the logic behind these statements? The problem is that there simply is no love without obedience. I’ve said this many times before, but love is not a warm feeling–it is a commitment, plain and simple. Like many have said before me, “If you have an obedience problem, you have a love problem.” To love someone is to submit to them and even obey them, unless obeying would transgress a law of God.
“Jesus replied, ‘If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.” John 14:23a
Saying you love the Lord and then marching to your own set of rules doesn’t make you a lover, it makes you a liar.
