Have you ever noticed how people greet each other with the questions, “How ya doin’?” or “What’s up,” and clearly could care less what the answer is? Often, they’re gone before you could answer if you wanted to! I know I’ve often been guilty of the same type of insincerity, and maybe you have, too. I know a few folks who live life at a much slower pace though, and I often admire their sincerity in such situations. If they ask you a question, somehow you know they want to hear the answer. No matter what our “speed” or our “personality type,” as Christian brothers and sisters, we are all called to love one another, and to be sincere about it. Of course, some people have different spiritual gifts and talents and will always be better at showing this sincerity, but God’s Word still requires it from all of us. If your friends and acquaintances were to give you a grade in this area, what would it average out to be?
“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.” Romans 12:9-16
