Spirit Filled?

As long as I can remember, I’ve had the same general personality.  Before I was a Christian, my goals and desires certainly didn’t reflect God’s plans, but the personality I used to get from point a. to point b. was the same.  Similarly, the original apostles and disciples each had personalities that show up in the Scriptures they penned.  Even though they all tell the same story and witness of the same Christ, their originality shows through.  These days some will tell you that one Christian is “Spirit filled” while another is not, pointing to how animated the “Spirit filled” Christian is in the way they worship, preach, teach or pray.  The truth is that every Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit at the moment they believe and confess Jesus as Lord.  They get 100% of God’s Spirit, not something less.  How animated a person is or is not has more to do with personality than it does with the Spirit that inhabits them.  What makes a person more “Spirit filled” is not that they have more of God’s Spirit than another (as if they Spirit was divisible or something), but rather that the “filled” Christian is more useful and faithful because they’ve allowed God’s Spirit to inhabit more of who they are inside, thus, making their decisions and their lives reflect Him more fully.  It’s all in the way one obeys, not in the way one prays!

“You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.”  Romans 8:9
