During their extended time in the desert, the Jews of old were promised by God (via Moses) that he would provide for them in every way. He provided water, spiritual guidance, and even food. Even unchurched folks could pass a quiz on the type of food! “Manna,” a type of sticky bread, was delivered each day directly from heaven. This bread sustained the Jews and it held prophecy for them as well. When Jesus came on the scene, he told them He was the “bread of life” just like the manna they’d eaten in the desert. Two thousand years later, Jesus remains the only real sustainer! Interestingly, at one point when Jesus spoke to people about their need to “eat his body and drink his blood” many followers abandoned him permanently. Unfortunately, some still do!
“Jesus said to them, ‘I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘from now on give us this bread.’ Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.'” John 6:32-35
