Temptation is probably Satan’s most valuable tool. He used it against Jesus in the desert, and he uses it against us almost every day. Unlike Jesus, many of us fall to temptation from time-to-time because of our sinful desire to do things our own way. In the end, that’s probably the greatest temptation of all–and that’s where Satan works best. He presents us with options–alternatives to serving God or to doing things God’s way.
“Again, the devil took him [Jesus] to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ‘All this I will give you,’ he said, ‘if you will bow down and worship me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”‘ Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.” Matthew 4:8-11
This is an excellent example of how Satan works, tempting Jesus to get something the Father wants Him to have, but promising it “the easy way,” and right now to boot! Remember… nothing worth having comes the easy way. And with His perfect example above, Christ proved once and for all that if you resist the Devil he will flee.
