Thou Shalt Not Nag!

I get a lot of mail from wives who want their husbands to become Christians.  While that is a wonderful desire, many of the people who write me have been going about it with exactly the wrong attitude.  I believe that a lot of teens who have one or more parents who aren’t believers make exactly the same mistakes.  They nag at the unbelievers until their subjects simply close off all incoming information on the subject.  Nagging is not a Spiritual gift.  Patience and kindness are fruits of the Spirit though, and are much more effective than nagging and complaining ever will be.  Just imagine that you were able to nag someone into making a profession of faith in Christ.  Do you honestly believe the profession would be heartfelt?  I’m reminded of an old saying I learned in college.  “A man convinced against his will is of the same conviction still.”  If you want to lead a close relative to the Lord, then close your mouth and let your actions speak much louder than your words ever could.

“Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.”  1 Peter 3:1-2
