What Massive Stones!

“As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!’ ‘Do you see all these great buildings?’ replied Jesus. ‘Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.'” Mark 13:1-2
When I lived in Europe, I used to like to go visiting castles on the weekends. I was always amazed at the incredible intricacy of these structures, and how they were built without the aid of modern machinery. The whole world is full of incredible creations just as magnificent. Although it’s been in the last two hundred years, we’ve accomplished some pretty incredible architectural feats in our country, too. I used to work in the world’s largest office building–the Pentagon! Did you know that building was built in only 18 months?! Not only that, but it was built in the middle of a swamp. Of course, it still IS a swamp, but that’s a whole different story! My point today is that regardless of how strong, regardless of how expensive, regardless of how “spiritual,” every single one of these “creations of man” will come tumbling down one day. That’s right! Every single one… and it will only take God one breath to bring the whole thing to pass. What is it that you’ve been treasuring? Is it your house? I have a historic house that I’ve put a lot of money, and a lot of elbow grease into… even MY house will be destroyed. Is it your car? Is it some jewelry? The only winning hand is to treasure your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, putting ALL your trust in Him. Absolutely everything else will come to an end… and maybe sooner than we think!
“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.” 2 Peter 3:10-13
