What’s In A Name?

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”  Psalm 139:13

When your parents named you, did they come up with it on their own, or did they get it from a magazine, a movie, or one of those huge books with thousands of baby names?  I was named after my father, like many boys are.  My wife and I named all of our children after relatives or with names that have Christian significance to us.  We did look through baby name books, but we also did something else.  We prayed about it.  We prayed for God to give us a “good name” for each of our children, and when we believed we had that name, we prayed about that too.  You may ask why so much thought and prayer goes into naming a few babies, but you may be surprised to know that God has been involved in naming every person who ever lived.  Life is no accident, and every moment of our lives (including receiving our names) was known by God even before the beginning of time.  In the verse below you’ll notice that Jesus’ name was given to his parents BEFORE He was conceived in His mother’s womb.  While that happening to Jesus may not be hard to believe, the Scriptures support the fact that it’s also true of you!  Believe me, if God knew your name before you were even conceived, He cares more deeply for you than you could ever imagine.

“On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.”  Luke 2:21
