Someone once said, “It’s not the parts of the Bible I don’t understand that bother me–it’s the parts I DO understand!” I couldn’t agree more. It’s easy to take the parts of God’s Word that we like–the parts that make us feel good about ourselves and who we are, and to completely ignore other parts. How do I know? From personal experience for starters. But also from listening carefully to the folks who come to me for advice. It’s interesting how busy we can be trying to work our way around God’s truths we don’t like–things that run contrary with what “we” want to do with our lives, or our money, or our time. Just for example, I can’t tell you how many people I’ve counseled who read their Bibles, go to church every time it’s open, spend time in prayer, and who are sexually active outside of marriage. Others are similarly involved in their churches, yet fail to support them financially. Truth is not just truth when it’s convenient–truth is truth, regardless of the circumstances, or of our personal desires. Is there an area of your life that God has been trying to get your attention about? I can tell you from experience, it’s easier to listen early on. Things can get a bit uncomfortable if you continue to ignore Him.
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. BUT if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” 1 John 1:6-7 (Emphasis mine)
