Much of what surrounds me in the world often calls out to my flesh! For example, I’ve never seen a donut that I didn’t like, or for that matter, a candy bar, or a cookie! Fortunately, running a few miles a week and using a little restraint keep me from getting huge! Other things call to me as well… things like cigarettes (I smoked for 19 years), and alcohol, and even worse things. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I’ve learned to ignore the call of most of these things, but ONLY with the Spirit’s help do I have any hope of walking a straight line. Because of my weaknesses, I make sure never to put myself into situations where I might be overly tempted. I don’t go to bars, hang around with women who aren’t my wife, watch R-rated movies, or cruise the donut shops! While we are in the flesh, each of us will have our struggles with the flesh. As Christians, we’re not to pay the slightest bit of attention. Are you making a provision for your flesh? If so, your flesh will control you instead of the Spirit of God. You’re either a slave to one or to the other.
“The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” Romans 13:12-14
