You’re Not The Boss Of Me!

“You’re not the boss of me!”
Who hasn’t heard (or even said) those words before? I grew up with brothers and sisters, so I can assure you I both heard them, and said them plenty! I even said something similar to my mother once. As a new teenager, I told her that I thought I should be able to make my own decisions. Ouch! Someday I’ll write a devotional about what happened to me that day! Over the last few months though, I’ve heard several young people get in similar skirmishes with their parents. Today, I heard of another young lady who told her parents, “I’m 18 now. You can’t tell me what to do!” Of course she still lives in their home, eats meals with them, and enjoys all the amenities they provide! What is it about man that makes us want to “be our own boss?” Didn’t something quite similar happen in the Garden of Eden–Satan telling Eve she could “be like God!” Oh, we can be our own bosses if we like, and not even a trip or two to the proverbial “woodshed” will dissuade a person who is set on walking their own way. Still, crazy as it sounds at 18, imagine the same arrogance at 25, or 45, or 65! Eventually, unless a person decides to stop being his or her own god, they will face eternity without the aid of a Lord…. or a Savior. They will truly “be their own boss” as they stand condemned before a Holy God.
My advice? Choose now to submit to all moral authorities in your life… and to accept Jesus Christ as your boss!
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 11:28-30)
