“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” Proverbs 13:20
When I think back to the folks I hung around with in junior high and high school, it’s a wonder I ever survived adolescence. They were unchurched, unsaved, unschooled, and unrighteous, but they were my #1 source for knowledge and wisdom! No wonder I got in so much trouble as a kid. Now that I have a relationship with the Lord, things are quite different. Don’t get me wrong now, I don’t walk around with geniuses all day or anything (no offense to my close friends who get this), but they’re not total idiots like my old friends either. I can turn several places in a moments notice and get good biblical advice and counsel. Of course, I’ve still got friends who are unchurched, unsaved, unschooled, and unrighteous… but they’re not where I go to get advice. They’re the folks who come to get it from me.
I’ve heard it said that you ARE what you EAT. I don’t know if that’s true, but I DO know this: You will become just like the people you hang around with. Look around at your close friends. Do you want to be just like them? If not, you might need to consider getting some new friends.
