I’ve heard it said that the operation of a person’s conscience is somewhat akin to an alarm clock. It works something like this: you do something wrong, or in many cases, you just THINK of doing something wrong, and the alarm (your conscience) sends you a warning. The problem with alarm clocks is that they can’t actually make you get out of the bed. And just like alarm clocks, the more you ignore your conscience, the less effective it becomes. I ought to know, too. I’ve had to replace alarm clocks because I got so used to the sound that I didn’t even hear them any more. I’ve also had my conscience replaced! When I accepted Christ the Holy Spirit came to dwell in my heart… Now He operates as a perfect conscience, sending me warnings, keeping me in direct connection with the Father, and guiding me on the straight and narrow path–that is, as long as I don’t start ignoring Him!
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” Jesus of Nazareth (John 14:26)
