In ancient times, cities built walls to protect them from other armies, wild animals, etc. Today, we don’t have huge rock walls around our nations, but we still have plenty of defenses to protect us from other countries, terrorists, etc. Individuals and families have defenses as well. We protect ourselves from the dangers around us by being alert, not hanging out in the wrong areas, locking our doors, etc. Still, even with modern technology everywhere, have you noticed how some people always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?. Whenever something bad happens, it usually happens to them. These are the people who get sexually transmitted diseases, get beat up, always seem to be in one car accident after another… basically they’re walking disaster areas! Many teenagers fall into this category. My thesis on why is a pretty simple one. You can give people advice, you can lift them up in prayer, you can try to help them make the right decisions, but in the end, it’s almost impossible to protect someone from themselves!
“Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” Proverbs 25:28
Next to God Himself, a healthy dose of self-control is probably the #1 defense mechanism we could ever have on our side!
