Imagine for a minute the smugness of the Jewish religious aristocracy as they saw Jesus dragged away, stripped, beaten, ridiculed, and crucified. As sure as the thought of it makes today’s Christian grimace, they were getting exactly what they wanted. They hated Him! They’d been trying to find a way to kill him for years and they’d finally gotten their way. Finally, this blot on the Jewish nation was getting what He deserved… and in the most humiliating way possible. Or… so they thought!
“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a PUBLIC SPECTACLE OF THEM, triumphing over them by the cross.” Colossians 2:15 (Emphasis mine)
Nobody nailed Jesus to that cross! Instead, Jesus chose the cross, and had Himself nailed to it. They tried to make a spectacle of Him, but they were playing right into the same hands they pierced. It was Christ who made the spectacle of us and our prideful ways… and now the same hands welcome us back into God’s grace.
