When I was in school, there always seemed to be a few really cool students. Starved for attention, I always wished I could be like them. It was like they were larger than life. Since I was anything but a Christian when I was young, most of the folks I looked up to were up to no good most of the time. Their status as “cool” came with a price. They had to be crazier, stupider, and more rebellious than everyone else. As I grew and learned the notoriety these things brought, I too began to do outrageous things to gain attention. I got attention alright, but most of the time in ways I grew to wish I hadn’t! God eventually brought much destruction into my life in his attempt to bring me full circle. Fortunately, it worked! Thanks to Christ, things are different in my life today. I guess I’m still a little rebellious, but now I’m rebelling against “church as usual” and what I call “pew sitting!” It hurts when I look out and see so many young people continuing to be being drawn in by the whole “popularity thing.” It always takes me back to my school days. If only I had understood then the price I would eventually pay for my shot at popularity. The price is still as high as ever! Oh, the years they’ll waste… and the tears they’ll shed.
