The Devil Made Me Do It!

“Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies.” Psalm 141:3-4

When I was young , there was a common saying that doesn’t get used much any more. Whenever someone would get caught doing something wrong, they’d reply, “The devil made me do it!” As a young boy, I actually thought the devil could make me do things I didn’t want to do, but somehow I still new everything I did wrong came out of the desires of my own sinful heart. After becoming a Christian, and learning a little about the Scriptures, I found that Satan CAN actually make people do things, but his power only rules over non-Christians and Christians who choose to walk in wicked ways. My prayer now is a lot like King David’s prayer above. I know that it’s by the grace of God alone that He’s allowed me an amount of success in staying on His path. Although I still have much to learn, I know that if I remain close to Him, He’ll remain close to me. It reminds me a little of a section of the model prayer Jesus gave us… “and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:13 It couldn’t hurt to add something similar to your prayers.

“Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by in safety.” Psalm 14:1-10
